Ever wondered what happened to the sandpit after it left intu Uxbridge? Well, the sand that filled it is now being enjoyed by seven elephants – to exfoliate their skin!
The intu Uxbridge beach was on the Lower Mall by Debenhams throughout the summer holidays, and was home to deckchairs, buckets, spades and many kids having fun. Not wanting to waste it, intu Uxbridge decided to donate it to a good cause, and it’s now being put to good use in the enclosures at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
The four tonnes of sand will be scattered into the paddocks for the elephants to roll in to maintain and rejuvenate their thick skin – like we would do when we exfoliate our skin.
Laurie Taylor, general manager at intu Uxbridge said: “We like to put things to good use where we can, so it’s brilliant that ZSL Whipsnade Zoo could make use of the sand. It’s nice to know we can help make a positive impact by working with external partners. The sandpit made so many shoppers smile over the summer and was such a compelling event, we just hope the animals are enjoying the sand as much!”
